Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant

The Medical University of South Carolina is looking for a Nurse Practitioner/Physician’s Assistant for the Interventional Spine Service in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. The position will function under the general direction and responsibility of the supervising physician; assume responsibility and accountability for providing care (including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures) for assigned patients; collaborate with members of the health care team to establish protocols; supervise treatment plans; and monitor quality of clinical practice in the Interventional Spine Service. The position will also interface with referring providers and insurance carriers (or their intermediaries) to provide clinical information for pre-authorization for reimbursement of spine services to be provided.
The position will perform all evaluation procedures for patients, including personal history and physical examination, distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings, and order diagnostic testing as appropriate. In addition, the position will prescribe necessary treatment and record patient data and tentative conclusions for review by physician. The position will also be responsible for ordering parenteral or controlled substances under the order of the physician; administer emergency medications and treatments ordered by a physician; dictate consults and reports; enter notes into the medical record; and, obtain informed consent prior to procedures on patients.
Additionally, the position will assist physicians in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; serve as an extension of the physician in settings where limited history and physical examination is required to evaluate changes in clinical status, laboratory or imaging findings; and relay information such as laboratory or imaging results to patients and families.
Furthermore, the position will monitor care delivered and serve as a clinical expert, role model and teacher/preceptor for nurses, PA students, interns and residents; provide instruction, supervision and education as necessary; assist with the development and implementation of health programs; participate in ongoing medical or departmental research projects; attend appropriate meetings as required; and perform related duties as assigned.
Education, training, experience:
Applicant must hold a valid SC driver's license, as well as current SC NP or PA licensure. One or two years of pain management, neurosurgical or neurological service experience preferred. Must be immediately available by telecommunication devices.
